Research Abstract

I am currently working on my Dissertation, titled "The Concept of Prolepsis in Stoicism." The concept prolepsis is usually translated as 'preconception' (sometimes 'anticipation') and is a concept of Stoic philosophy of mind and language. My research focuses on the use of this concept in early Stoicism (in particular in Chrysippus), and I hope to bring out the exact function of this concept, the nature of its content, and the manner in which we are thought to acquire these preconceptions. Chrysippus claims the prolepsis to be a criterion of truth, and my research intends to display the Stoic justification for taking the prolepseis to be epistemologically foundational in this way.
