| Research Abstract
I work on various issues in and around ethics, epistemology, and the philosophy of mind and action. At the moment I am writing a dissertation on instrumental rationality. The hope is to understand how it is that we can appraise agents as acting well or badly with respect to their ends, independently of whatever reasons there may be to have those ends. The obvious way to do this - to suppose that ends themselves provide reasons – has implausible consequences. This has led many philosophers to look for alternative ways to understand such appraisal. My dissertation examines these attempts. More generally, I am interested in just about anything to do with practical or theoretical reasons and rationality, and especially in the relationship between them.
