(2) I am willing to drop the 1st midterm if it affects your grade for the worse. At the end of the course we will calculate 2 grades - a grade including the 1st midterm and a grade without it. Your overall grade will be the higher of these two grades. The grade without 1st midterm will be calculated as follows: 40% 2nd midterm, 50% Final, 10% Homework.

Midterm information

lThe 1st midterm is on Monday 21st April. It will cover the material from: ch.1, 2 and 3, as well as the fallacies we’ve covered in class.* It will include at least some of the following:

¡(1) True/False questions about the central concepts

¡(2) Forms and Counter-Examples. I’ll give you some invalid arguments and ask you to provide counter-examples (n.b. the arguments may require applying some of the techniques for writing well-crafted arguments)

¡(3) Arguments and Non-Arguments. I’ll give you some passages and ask you to determine whether or not they are arguments. For non-arguments, you'll have to say what type of non-argument it is. For arguments, you’ll have to write a well-crafted version.

¡(4) Definitions. I'll ask you to (i) distinguish definitions of different types and (ii) identify and briefly explain cases of equivocation and persuasive definition.

¡(5) Fallacies. I’ll give you some arguments and ask you to determine which fallacies they commit. This section will be multiple choice.

To study for the midterm I recommend doing as many practice problems as possible. There is no official homework for this week but you should try problems from 3.2 A and 3.3. on definitions. (Although note that 3.3 B asks you to apply the six criteria for definitions. You can ignore this).

* Exceptions: the appendix to ch.2, 3.1, and p.101-106 of ch.3

Reading on Definitions

For the reading on definitions, you only need to read through to p. 100 of chapter 3.2. You don't need to read the section starting p.101 on Definition by Genus and Difference. As this is short, you might also read chapter 3.3 (which is also short). I expect we will get to some of that material in class tomorrow as well.

I've just noticed a mistake on the syllabus. For tomorrow (Monday) you should read Layman 1.2 on Forms and Counterexamples. You don't need to read 1.3 until Wednesday. Really sorry about this error.

Sorry for the confusion today about the map of how the main concepts relate to each other. I've posted a revised version of the map here. It's pretty much the same as the one that is included in the lecture notes except that it makes clear that invalid arguments are unsound too.
