Sherri Lynn Conklin publication

Congrats to Sherri Lynn Conklin (UCSB PhD, 2020)! Her co-authored paper , “Where are the Women? The Ethnic Representation of Women Authors in Philosophy Journals, by Regional Affiliation and Specialization” has been accepted for publication in The European Journal of Analytic Philosophy.

Statement of Support

As faculty in the department of Philosophy, we would like to voice our strong support for our teaching assistants and associates. Our support is based on the recognition of graduate students as foundational to the department’s research and teaching mission. We all benefit when graduate students are paid a living wage. We are concerned about economic insecurity among our graduate students. Salaries have failed to keep pace with inflation and rising rents in our area.

Sherri Lynn Conklin New Position

Congratulations to Sherri Lynn Conklin (PhD, 2020)! Her project, titled “Set Theoretic Accounts of Second Order Moral Properties: A Study in Algorithmic Ethics” is supported by the 2-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship on Ethics and Technology with the Georgia Tech School of Public Policy.

UCSB on NBC's College Bowl!

UCSB will be appearing on NBC's College Bowl game show airing 9/23 at 8pm. Most of the team members are part of our Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl debate team based in the Philosophy Department. Go UCSB!

Jason Hanschmann Defends Dissertation

Congratulations to Jason Hanschmann on successfully defending his dissertation, "The Metaphysics of Organized Social Groups".

In Memoriam: Donald W. Crawford (1938-2022)

Donald W. Crawford died peacefully at home on July 19, 2022. He is survived by his wife, Sharon, sister Linda, daughters Kathryn and Alison, and 5 grandsons. Professor Crawford was a longtime senior member of the Department of Philosophy at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he also served as the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs for more than a decade. He was well-known for his work in aesthetics.
