As faculty in the department of Philosophy, we would like to voice our strong support for our teaching assistants and associates. Our support is based on the recognition of graduate students as foundational to the department’s research and teaching mission. We all benefit when graduate students are paid a living wage. We are concerned about economic insecurity among our graduate students. Salaries have failed to keep pace with inflation and rising rents in our area.

Donald W. Crawford died peacefully at home on July 19, 2022. He is survived by his wife, Sharon, sister Linda, daughters Kathryn and Alison, and 5 grandsons. Professor Crawford was a longtime senior member of the Department of Philosophy at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he also served as the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs for more than a decade. He was well-known for his work in aesthetics.
